West Solent One Design built by Berthons Boat Co. In 1931.
She carries the number W7, however the original W7 which was also called Dilkusha, was built in 1924 for Lt. Colonel H.C. Guest.  He then decided to have a new boat built in 1931, but wanted to keep the name and number so this yacht has become W7.
The class was designed by H. Jacobs and H.G. May of Berthons as a cost effective cruiser racer for the Royal Lymington Yacht Club.  At the time a new W class could be bought for £600, a similar 6 meter yacht would have cost £1500 so they were well received.  A total of 32 boats were built for the UK market, 5 built and shipped to Argentina and one built under licence in Bombay.  The design was adopted by the Royal Burnham Yacht Club where it was known as the Royal Burnham Restricted Class.
The WSOD, also known as the W class, has seen a huge resurgence in recent years with a number of original boats given professional rebuilds, as well as one or two new examples being built.  They are superb boats with exceptionally beautiful lines and have proven to be excellent classic regatta boats that only need a small crew and are still very competitive.
This is a very cost effective boat with which to take part in the big classic regattas and race amongst the finest classic yachts in the world while possibly having even more fun than those owners.
Between 2004-2008 she underwent a major professional refit in the previous ownership, in which the hull was repaired, keel bolts replaced, new deck laid, complete new rig and spars fitted and a new interior.  Al this work was well documented and done to a very high standard.
The current owner became custodian of a superb yacht in very nice condition, and has simply maintained her with professional help to keep the boat looking smart and in sound condition.

Construction
Carvel planked in what is believed to be American Red Pine bronze screw fastened to sawn oak frames.  Two intermediate laminated oak timbers which are copper rivet fastened, the majority of these timbers were renewed during the refit.
Garboard and first plank up replaced new in 2006.  All hood ends and garboards refastened with bronze screws in 2006.
New extended mast step and internal stem arrangement fitted new in 2003 to strengthen the hull.
New laminated iroko external stem fitted in 2006.
External lead ballast keel fastened with silicone bronze bolts.  All bolts new in 2003.
Grown timber floors across the centreline were fitted new in the refit to replace original iron floors.
Yacht laid teak deck glued over a marine plywood subdeck, all new in 2003.  Varnished teak king planks and margin boards with varnished teak covering board and small toe rail.
Flush decks with an elegant and original varnished teak skylight incorportated into the sliding companion hatch.
Elegant cockpit with curved varnished teak coamings and slatted varnished teak thwarts.  Locker door at aft end to access lazarette.
Tiller steering with a chromed bronze stock.
Rig
The rig was renewed entirely during the refit including spars, rigging and sails.
Fractional Bermudan sloop on a keel stepped hollow spruce mast.
Mast new from Collars in 2008.  New extended mast step designed by Ed Burnett to spread the loads of the rig more effectively.
Slab reefing varnished spruce boom new from Collars in 2003.
Stainless steel standing rigging to internal stainless chain plates.  Rigging all new in 2008.
Sails include mainsail (Sanders Sails 2007), genoa, jib, spinnaker and asymmetric spinnaker new from Sanders Sails in 2003.  All in good condition.
Continuous line furling headsail system with a cover that is raised to protect the furled headsail from the sun.

Simple yet stunning interior was all new in the major refit.
2 berths with sitting headroom.
Step over the engine box into the cabin with a galley area to starboard and chart desk to port. Joinery for galley and chart desk in varnished teak.
Galley has a single burner Origo 1500 spirit stove set on gimbals.
Saloon settee berth either side.
Varnished T&G teak bulkhead forward with passageway to starboard going forward.
Forepeak is predominantly storage space.  Manual sea toilet set into the joinery on the port side, discharges directly overboard.

Kidby Oyster Smack built in Brightlingsea on 1907.  One of only 2 remaining Kidby & Sons boats still sailing.
Fishing number CK348, which denotes her registration in Colchester Creek.
Complete professional rebuild in Maldon completed in 2003 with all new planking, frames and deck.
In current ownership since 2010, she has been thoroughly upgraded with new spars, sails and rigging, engine installation and a new interior.  In the present ownership My Alice has been raced regularly and successfully with the east coast Smack fleet, known to be a fast boat and one to beat.
The engine installation comprises a main engine with hydraulic drives to a separate leg and propeller each side.  This set up has minimal impact on her sailing performance but allows for excellent close quarter handling with 2 widely spaced propellers.
A very impressive smack in fine fettle, only offered for sale due the owners health.

History
My Alice was built by Kidby & Sons in Brightlingsea to the order of Captain Fred Stokes of Tollesbury.  Stokes was a local fisherman and one of the many sailors from this area of the country who were employed during the summer season to race the big J-class yachts on the south coast of England and beyond.
Stokes became a successful racing skipper in the big class yachts, earning himself a good deal of prize money on top of his wages.  Between 1905 and 1908, he earnt as much as £100 per season in prize money, plus wages of £3/week.  This was the equivalent to the price of a good house which gave him enough money to commission his own smack to his own specification.
Stokes knew what he wanted, a racing smack that would be able to fish but could be pushed hard with excellent performance.  Her lines are exquisite with a very elegant counter that is slightly narrower than many of her contemporaries.  Her underwater sections have a smooth run aft, good hull form midships and fine fore sections with good bite for windward work.
My Alice was his pride and joy and as known from the beginning as a fast boat, but she was also a very successful fishing vessel,  In 1930 she broke the record with 130 barrels of sprats caught in one tide with a single net.  It is thought she still holds this record.
Between 1993 – 2001, My Alice was completely rebuilt by a yard in Maldon with 3 highly respected shipwrights, led by Brian Kennell, working on her.  All the frames, planking and deck was renewed with little of the original structure left.  This work was well documented.

Hull
Carvel planked in larch all galvanised nail fastened to heavy sawn oak frames.
Frames are constructed from futtocks bolted together with galvanised coach bolts.
Opepe keel new in the rebuild.
12 tons of internal ballast in the form of concrete and lead pigs.
 
Decks and Cockpit
Complete new deck structure of oak deck beams on a hardwood beamshelf.
Deck is 2 layers of marine plywood, total thickness of 1.5”, epoxy bonded together and screw fastened to the deck beams.  Sheathed externally in epoxy glass cloth and finished with non-slip deck paint.
Oak covering boards with the plywood rebated into them to keep a secure and water tight join.
Bulwarks all round on oak stanchions which are mounted through the oak covering board in the traditional manner.  Approximately 20 stanchions replaced in 2023 with new bulwark planking and capping rails.
 
Superstructure
2 small deck structures in way of the old fish hold hatches.
Oak comings, painted inside and out with sheathed plywood decks.
Rig
Powerful gaff cutter rig on a keel stepped hollow spar from Noble Spars, new in 2016 and finished with Allwood.
All other spars in varnished douglas fir or spruce, boom, gaff and bowsprit.  All new in last 7 years.
Spruce topmast from Noble Spars in 2019.  Can be lowered to reduce overall air draught.
2 x alloy whisker poles.
Galvanised wire standing rigging with dead eyes and lanyards to external galvanised chain plates.
Sympathetic but extensive use of dyneema to aid rig handling.
All traditional wooden blocks.
 
Sails
All sails in very good condition.  Mainsail, topsail, staysail, jib, jib topsail, watersail/storm jib, small ballon jib, large ballon jib, No.2 staysail and No.2 jib.
Most sails ne win 2019 and used only occasionally.
Machinery
Engine
Volvo Penta D3-55 55hp 4cyl engine installed new in 2011 by French Marine.  Less than 900 hours use.
Engine is installed athwartships under the aft deck and is connected to a hydraulic pump powering twin propellers mounted on slim bronze legs on each quarter.
Legs are Parker Hannefin saildrives.
Brunton folding propellers.
This set up allows incredible manoeuvrability in close quarters and gives her a cruising speed of 7 knots.

Flexible water tank of approximately 100 litres.

A fascinating part of our maritime history, the Lynher is a Tamar Sailing Barge built to carry cargoes around Plymouth and the surrounding area. Rescued from the mud as a derelict hulk and rebuilt by a previous owner, she underwent another major rebuild which was completed in 2017 and she went into commercial work in 2019. The Lynher has been kept as original as possible with a deck layout much as it would have been when she was working. Below decks her cargo hold has been kept as a large open space, perfect for exhibition work. Of course this could be adapted to suit any future need and she could be looked on as a blank canvas for her new owners. Fitted with a Beta 75hp main engine and an electric wing engine to assist with manoeuvres. This is a very special vessel with a fascinating history.

Tamar sailing barge launched in 1896 at the yard of James Goss in Calstock on the banks of the River Tamar near Plymouth.
Part of the National Historic Fleet of prestigious vessels.
The extraordinary and well documented history of this boat tells an incredible tale from her days working the river delivering cargo between the sea at Plymouth right up to the small inland villages, to be rescued from the mud and rebuilt not once but twice, with passionate and dedicated people who have saved the boat and her history for all to enjoy.
The majority of her working life was spent carrying stone from inland quarries to the port of Plymouth and further down the coast to Fowey, Falmouth, Dartmouth and the like, although her general cargoes would have included coal, market garden produce and a myriad of items to be sold around the coasts. After her war service in Plymouth, she returned to carrying stone before being laid up to sink in the mud in a small creek off the Tamar.
Here she was found by eccentric enthusiast Charlie Force who literally dug 33 years worth of mud from her hull by hand, floated the hulk down river and started a major rebuild in the 1990’s replacing most of her planking and frames plus new deck and rig.  Interestingly her original mast was located elsewhere on the Tamar and was reunited with the boat.
Now owned by a Community Interest Company, a second major refit was completed in 2017.  She was put into commercial operation in 2019 and undertook various trips around the Plymouth area giving people a glimpse of a bygone era and the skills necessary to navigate a sailing barge in the close confines of a river.
The vessel is largely empty below decks and serves as a fantastic platform for community learning or an exhibition centre.  She visits various maritime events and opens her decks to the public to educate people not only about the specific history of Lynher herself, but of the world into which she was launched.
So what does the future hold for a vessel of such historical importance and one as unique as Lynher?  Her size and volume lend her perfectly to be a platform for events and displays, providing day trips for educational or charter purposes, or perhaps as a corporate flagship.  Time will tell but it is certainly important that whoever takes on this beguiling vessel continues to use her and maintain her for the benefit of all.

Straight laid solid pine deck fastened to the oak deck beams.  Caulked and payed seams, finished in grey deck paint for ease of maintenance.
Heavy oak carlins either side of the cargo hatch with half deck beams supported beneath by iron hanging knees.
 
Superstructure
Large central cargo hatch with oak coamings.  Hatch is decked over with pine boards and a canvas cover to make it water tight.
Curved forehatch with ladder into the forecabin.
Rig
Gaff cutter rig on a solid pine deck stepped mast in a tabernacle.
Solid pine bowsprit, gaff and boom all with an oil finish for ease of maintenance.

Beta Marine 75hp diesel engine installed in 2018.
Mounted on the starboard side, drives a fixed 4 blade bronze propeller.
Port side electric wing engine is a Lynch system with twin motors connected via belt drives to the shaft.  This wing engine gives hugely improved manoeuvrability in close quarters.

Designed by Arthur C. Robb and built by Port Hamble Ltd in 1959.
Built for the Royal Military Academy Sailing Club and funded by the Nuffield Trust with an £8000 donation towards the build.  She was named Wish Stream after a small stream running through the grounds of the Sandhurst Academy.
She spent her early years racing with the military, taking part in numerous Fastnets and other offshore races.  She was then sold to the CEO of IBM Europe and was based in Denmark, before being sold in 1983 to sculptor Clark Murray from New York who kept her in Maine before sailing south in 1995 to the Caribbean and then on to Europe.
The present owner acquired the boat in 1997 after falling in love with the lines of her sistership.  Since then she has been professionally maintained with much structural refit work carried out when necessary and cruised extensively from Denmark down to La Rochelle and over to Ireland.  She has taken part in the regular Classic Channel Regatta winning the cross channel race overall in 2009.
This is a well proportioned and well set up yacht, easily handled with her split rig making her an excellent cruising boat, but also a tough regatta competitor when required.  A fine pedigree yacht that has covered tens of thousands of ocean miles over the years.

Hull
Carvel planked in teak fastened with bronze screws to steam bent oak timbers of 1.75” x 2” @ 9” centres.  Hull re-fastened in 1987.
Galvanised steel strap floors across the centreline.  Floors removed and re-galvanised with new bolts in 2001.
Bronze floors in way of the engine and aft.
Grown oak floors with galvanised throat bolts up forward.
Heavy duty galvanised mast step.
External lead ballast keel of 3.5 tons fastened with iron keel bolts.  Bolts new in 2001.

Kim Holman Bermudan Cutter built by Tucker Brown of Burnham-on-Crouch in 1963.
Designed for RORC Class II and launched in time for the 1963 Fastnet Race.  She was the reserve yacht for the 1963 British Admirals Cup team.
Holman to many people in the know is considered one of the most talented UK yacht designers of the period, producing some extremely successful yachts and class designs that have become iconic boats, such as the Stella and the Twister.  His designs were without exception superb sailing vessels, always did exactly what they were designed to do and frequently took others by surprise with their pace and ability.
This yacht, one of a small handful built to the same lines, exudes a subtle beauty and elegance found in very few other designers work of the time.  She is also fast and very seaworthy, proven by her impeccable racing record against some of the well known yachts of the era such as Bloodhound and Lutine.  She has since crossed the Atlantic to cruise and race and various parts of the globe, turning heads everywhere she goes.
In the present ownership since 2012, she underwent a major professional refit in 2013 and has since cruised extensively, visiting not only the usual haunts of the West Country and Brittany, but also a trip to Norway via Ireland, the Western Isles and Shetland, then around the North Cape and through the White Sea and the Belomor Canal to the Baltic and St Petersburg.  During this period she received 3 separate awards from the Royal Cruising Club.  In this time she has also competed successfully in classic yacht regattas and holds a JCH rating of 8.6993.
Now back in her home port of Salcombe, she is undergoing some more refit work prior to another busy schedule next season.
With many improvements, upgrades and repairs over the last 10 years she is in really good sailing condition and has proven that she is not just a classic regatta winner, but also a superb cruising boat.  The owner likes to think of her as an Aston Martin Grand Tourer, fast and elegant but very comfortable with it.  She is everything that is required of a classic yacht for the modern world.  She rewards being sailed well and forgives being sailed less attentively!

General Description
Companion hatch into the doghouse from the cockpit with double doors and a sliding hatch.
The doghouse sole is the top of the engine compartment.  Small seat either side, an ideal spot to sit while on passage with good visibility.  Single quarter berth to port.
Steps down with galley to port and chart desk to starboard.
Chart desk faces aft with a comfortable secure seat.  Switchboard and nav aids all easily to hand.
Half height painted bulkheads with varnished teak trim separate off the main saloon.
Full length settee berth either side with a pilot berth each side under the deck head.  Storage lockers behind and under the berths.
Centreline dropleaf varnished mahogany saloon table.
Starboard side passage going forward with heads compartment to port.
Forecabin has a large storage bin to starboard, useful for spare sails, fenders etc.  TO port is a cosy double berth.  Forehatch over.  Chain locker in the bows.

Danish gaff ketch built as a fishing vessel in Denmark by Jensen and Lauridsen, Esbjerg in 1936.
Major rebuild in 1995/6 by Neilsen & co. Gloucester with many new frames, lots of new planking and a complete new deck, deckhouse and interior.
Bought by the present professional shipwright owner in 2015 through Wooden Ships, the vessel has subsequently had a major refit including major hull repairs, shortening of the deck house, a replacement engine, new rig, new interior and many new systems.  The vessel is now licensed for commercial activity under the MCA to Category 2 60 miles from safe haven.  She carries all gear and equipment required by the MCA.
The vessel also has a commercial cargo licence for carrying up to 1 ton of paying cargo which possibly makes her of interest to the recent sail cargo movement.
Licensed for 12 passengers and 3 crew, she is an easy boat to handle with the split ketch rig and a very handy size, big enough to give a decent interior volume and deck space but not so big as to be difficult to handle.  The deck house is an unusual feature that gives a deck saloon, galley and chart area all with excellent all round visibility, a sheltered warm space making passages in northern climates much easier for the crew.  It also increases the inside useable volume of the boat enormously.
An excellent example of the type, exceptionally pretty and well maintained by the professional owner.

Carvel planked in 2.25” oak as is common in all the Danish boats.
Heavy sawn oak frames fastened with galvanised boat nails.
Approximately 50% of the planking and many frames were replaced in the previous ownership by Nielsen & Co. Gloucester.  Work done in 1995.
Many of the port side frames replaced between 2015-2017 along with some hull planking and ceiling planks.
Approximately 12.5 tons of internal ballast comprising concrete, lead and steel bars.
Straight laid iroko deck of 2.25”, nail fastened to the deck beams.  Caulked with oakum and payed with pitch.  Deck all new in 1995..
Slightly raised aft deck elevates the helm position for good visibility and improves headroom in the aft cabin.  Varnish oak aft cabin hatch.
High bulwark all round with oak capping rail on oak stanchions mounted through the covering board.  Much of the bulwark planking was new in 2014.

14 berths in 3 separate cabins with 2 doubles and 10 single berths.
The accommodation is split between the deck house and below decks, with the galley in the deck house which leaves more space below.
Aft door into the deckhouse with a seating area and table to port and the galley to starboard.
Galley has a 3 burner gas stove with oven and grill, 24 volt fridge and a single stainless sink with pressurised hot and cold water.
Forward to port is the chart desk and to starboard is the companion ladder going down below.
Ladder goes into the main saloon with a heads compartment to port and Reflex diesel fired heater to starboard that heats 3 radiators.
Large central saloon table with a settee berth and pilot berth either side.
Engine room is accessed through a door in the bulkhead at the aft end of the saloon.
Forward end of the saloon has storage space to port and a snug seating area to starboard.
Port side door going forward into the forecabin which has 6 single berths and a shower cubicle.
On the port side are 4 single berths in 2 rows and to starboard are another 2 singles.  Forward to port is the shower compartment with full standing headroom.

43′ bermudan sloop designed by Kim Holman, built by Tucker Brown, Essex in 1967.  Yet another example of how the underrated Kim Holman was at the forefront of British yacht design at this time.
This design reflects the cutting edge thinking of the time when wetted surface areas were under consideration and attempts made at reduction by putting the rudder on a skeg separate from the keel and reducing the surface area of the keel which was still a moulded section of the hull and had not yet become the simple fin now universal in GRP designs.  The counter is retrousse, the hull has ample freeboard with the extra beam we came to expect at this time .
The additional freeboard means that there is ample head-room below without having a coach-roof the full length of the deck. The coach-roof is restricted to aft of the mast where the cabin sole level is raised over the engine leaving ample, clear fore and side decks.
The cock-pit is particularly attractive being divided in racing fashion with the helmsman right aft untrammelled by the boom and main sheet with a radiussed seat , separating the helm from the crew who have plenty of space to work the 2 pairs of sheet winches from the deep, safe forward well, sheltered behind the coach-roof with a spray-hood over the cabin entrance.
Bought by the present owners in 2009 after some years of neglect, they spent 3 years rebuilding the boat in preparation for some long distance cruising.  A full list of the work carried out is available, but it involved repairs to the hull with new planks, frames and fastenings, various new floors and a new cockpit.  The engine was replaced, systems upgraded and the rig improved.  She set sail in 2012 for the Caribbean and has since covered many thousands of miles with her 2 owners, and has proved to be a very comfortable, safe and fast passage making yacht, plus she was raced successfully at the Antigua Classics Regatta.
After many years of adventures it is time to pass the boat on to new owners who can continue to use her as she was designed, and although they will be very sad to see her go the current owners will take solace in the knowledge they will be passing her on in great shape and ready for whatever new adventures await.
This is a very fine quality yacht, very nicely built in the best materials, capable of being driven by only 2 crew  on fast, comfortable passages. She is easily managed with a sensible rig but is still a fast and competitive yacht

Construction
Planked in 1 1/16” pitch pine to the top of the strap floors, mahogany planking above up to the deck.  All copper rivet fastened to steam bent Canadian rock elm timbers of 1 3/8” x 1 5/8” at 9” centres.
Heavier laminated mahogany ring frames in way of the mast and bulkheads.
Splined topsides for a fair finish
Laminated iroko back bone and stem.  Bronze strap floors across the centreline with bronze floor bolts.  Heavy section iroko floors fitted around the mast step in 2014.  Also some original laminated wooden floors up forward
External lead ballast keel of 5.5 tons secured with bronze keel bolts.  1 bolt drawn in 2012 and tested to destruction.  Found to be in near perfect condition, this one was replaced with a new bolt but the others were assumed to be in the same excellent condition.
Original deck of 5/8” marine plywood, sheathed externally and painted.  In 1999 the deck was overlaid with yacht laid swept teak, screwed and glued to the sheathed plywood deck.  A few areas of soft plywood were replaced, in way of the chain plates and forehatch.
Laminated mahogany hanging knees throughout the hull.
Varnished teak margin boards and covering boards with a varnished teak toe rail.  Stainless steel pushpit, pulpit and stanchions.
Small coachroof stops aft of the mast.  Varnished teak coamings with radiused forward corners and chromed bronze windows.  Sheathed plywood coachroof deck with varnished teak grab rails and a small Lewmar hatch either side.
Between the mast and coachroof is a larger Lewmar hatch and a pair of chromed bronze dorade vents on varnished teak vent boxes.
Self draining cockpit, completely renewed in 2012.  Strong douglas fir frame with Robbins elite marine plywood all sheathed and painted.  Original scrubbed teak thwarts reused and glued to marine plywood bases.  Cockpit split by the mainsheet track giving a separate space aft for the helms person.  Bridge deck to the companion hatch.
Stainless steel bimini frame over the cockpit for shelter from the sun, also carries 2 solar panels.
Varnished teak spoked wheel on a varnished teak pedestal, new steering cables in 2012.  Monitor wind vane self steering system on the counter.

Masthead Bermudan sloop rig on a keel stepped painted alloy mast with single spreaders.
Selden aluminium slab reefing boom sheeted to a Lewmar track in the cockpit.  Fitted with a stack pack system and lazyjacks.  Stainless boom gallows over the sprayhood.
Stainless steel granny bars either side of the mast for safety when working the rigging in rough weather.
Stainless steel standing rigging and rigging screws to internal stainless chain plates.  Some chain plate bolts removed and checked in recent years.  Mostly Sta-lock fittings on the rigging.
Standing rigging of varying ages but all recent.  New forestay and cap shrouds in 2015. 2 new lowers in 2022, other 2 lowers new in 2017.  Back stay new in 2012.
Pair of lower shrouds and a single cap shroud with a single standing backstay.
Profurl roller furling headsail system to the stemhead carries the genoa, new in 2015.
Harken MkIII inner roller furling system with a yankee jib, fastened with a quick release system so can be moved aft when not required.  This allows 2 headsails to be flown for easy downwind sailing.

This 45′ gaff cutter was inspired by the lines of a Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter called Hilda, the builder and owner employed a naval architect to slightly alter the lines in order to get more internal volume and therefore more accommodation than the original working boat.  The underwater lines are barely altered, however the topsides have been increased by one plank and the exaggerated sheer flattened a little which has created a cavernous interior space making her a very comfortable boat.
Built by the owner over a period of time, the keel was laid down in April 2006 and the hull was launched in summer 2012, however she was officially commissioned  and finished in 2014.  The owner trained as a shipwright with Hillyards from an early age and went on to run a very successful large scale carpentry business so has a wealth of knowledge and skills which he employed to build this very fine yacht.  Every tree was carefully chosen to ensure the timber that went into her was just right, the larch was all felled on an estate in southern England specially for this boat, and the choice of materials for fastenings and fixings is such that she is built to last.
The design strays away from the traditional pilot cutter in a very effective way, taking the best features of those seaworthy work boats that have been tested over time, but adding to them to make an excellent boat for modern cruising and sailing.  The most notable addition is the doghouse which provides an excellent sheltered area and still allows the occupants to be on deck where they can enjoy the passing scenery.  It also allows easy and safe access below decks without having to scramble in and out of a narrow sliding hatch and gives two extra sea berths if necessary.  The hydraulic wheel steering is set on a box on the aft deck with the wheel facing forward so the helmsman can sit astride the box in a safe, secure and comfortable manner with the wheel forward of him.  The hydraulics have been carefully balanced so as to make the feedback as good as possible but they still allow for easy control of the big rudder even when handling in close quarters under power.
The boat has been cruised extensively around the UK and northern Europe since her launch with trips to Scotland, West Country and across the Channel.  Proven to be a safe, comfortable and fast boat that turns many heads

44′ bermudan cutter for sale designed by Max Oertz and built by Hans Heidtmann, Hamburg in 1925.
Max Oertz was the Kaisers naval architect and was responsible for the Kaisers own yachts, Meteor IV and Meteor V, as well as numerous 10m rule yachts and his big schooner Germania.
This design was very advanced for her time and an unusual design but proved to be fast and sea-worthy, winning the North Sea Race and the Kieler Woche in the late 1920s.  She later moved to the UK and was in the ownership of the Blewitt family for many years (Mary Blewitt of RORC fame) and later owned by Maurice Laing, who operated her as a sail training vessel in Scottish waters.
After a complete rebuild in the mid 1990s, she was purchased by the current owners in 2007, who have continued to update and maintain the boat to a very high level.  A full list of recent works is available upon request but includes a new engine, new teak deck, new sails, new ballast keel and keel bolts and an updated interior.
Since 2007 she has been raced regularly in classic sailing regattas proving to be a fast, comfortable boat and a real head turner.  Her large sail area and long waterline length make her a fast boat but still easily handled and suitable for family cruising.
A superb sailing yacht with a fully documented history, well maintained and up to date, ready for the season.

International Six Meter racing yacht built to Rule 2.
Designed by Johan Anker and built by Anker and Jensen in 1931.
She was built as the personal yacht of Johan Anker and in her he won the Scandinavian Gold Cup in Gothenburg in 1931.  In 1932 she was sold to the great helmsman Magnus Konow who won the Gold Cup and the One Ton Cup.  In 1933 she was sold to the UK and was converted for cruising around 1935 and spent much of her time after this on the Hamble.
In 2003 she was purchased by a well known member of the meter boat community, rebuilt and raced successfully at various events around Europe.
Purchased by the current owner in 2019 she then went through a major refit involving serious structural repairs and improvements, a complete new rig and all new systems.  Clare Lallows yard on the Isle of Wight, together with an experienced yacht surveyor, completed a structural refit including new planking, frames and rudder replacement.
The yacht is now offered in full racing trim, optimised to a very high level and fully equipped for racing in the 6 meter series.
Top professionals have been engaged at all stages of the design and build to ensure the hull, rig and systems are as good as they could possibly be.  The rig was designed in conjunction with various people including Tim Dean Consultancy Ltd.
Now under UK flag, this 6mR yacht is sailing under the sail number GBR31.  Raced at the 2023 Worlds in Cowes and finished 11th overall.
Offered for sale individually, but could be bought as part of a pair in conjunction with Abu.  The systems, rigs and racing set up are identical on each boat making for exciting sailing as part of a team.

Carvel planked in 28mm Sapele mahogany with epoxy bonded plank seams.
Fastened with 316L stainless steel screws to laminated Sapele frames spaced at 250mm.  The frames are also bonded to the planking with epoxy.
Hull sheathed externally below the waterline with epoxy glass cloth.
Keel laminated in 65mm sections.  Stem laminated in 6mm sapele.
Sawn Sapele floors across the centreline, side fastened through the frames with stainless steel bolts.
External lead ballast keel of 3.3 tons fastened with 316L stainless bolts.
Internal bulkheads of marine plywood glued and screwed to the frames creating structural bulkheads faced with T&G panelling.

Straight laid teak deck of 8mm epoxy bonded to the sub deck.
12mm marine plywood subdeck screw fastened to the Sapele deck beams.  Plywood sheathed externally in epoxy glass cloth to create a totally watertight deck.
Low bulwark all round with a varnished Sapele capping rail.  The bulwark is mounted on stanchions which protrude through the painted covering board and are epoxy bonded in place.
Bronze Panama eye fairleads and bronze/teak cleats.
Self draining cockpit with varnished Sapele coamings.  Laid teak thwarts and cockpit sole.
Thwarts lift to access large lockers.  Cockpit sole removeable to access aft bilge and stern gland, plus a big locker which holds the inflatable dinghy.

Wooden Ships Comments on this International Six Meter GBR31
International 6 meter racing yacht SILVERVINGEN built to Rule 3.  Designed by Tore Holm and built by Hagerstens Batvarv, Sweden in 1939.
At the outbreak of WWII, Silvervingen was laid up and not sailed until after the war.  Tore Holm designed a cruising interior and small coachroof for her, but she went on to race successfully throughout the 1940’s and 1950’s under various different names.
Purchased in 2004 by the previous owner, Silvervingen was in a sorry state and needing a thorough rebuild.  Over a 9 year period the deck was removed and the hull slowly put back into shape to reinstate the original sheer line.  The wooden keel was replaced and new ballast keel bolts fitted.  Over 70 frames were replaced in streamed oak and all the galvanised plate floors were renewed.  A new deck was fitted with 12mm plywood overlaid with Oregon pine.
She was then sold into UK ownership and a major period of upgrading commenced to optimise the yacht for racing in the 6m series.  The basic boat was in excellent condition and needed little structural repair, but the rig was renewed entirely, the deck hardware layout professionally re-designed and all new electronic systems fitted.

Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter built by Rowles of Pill near Bristol in 1893.
The build was commissioned by pilot Frank Trott at a cost of £500, she went on to be a very successful pilot boat and regatta winner in the annual pilot cutter races around the Bristol Channel.
In 1900 she became known as the ‘boat with the new boom’ after she was fitted with the first example of the famous Appledore roller reefing system which went on to become commonplace on all pilot cutters, enabling the mainsail to be reefed easily even in heavy weather.  She still sports her original Appledore gear on the boom, overhauled and improved with grease nipples to enable regular greasing of the moving parts.
After retiring from her working life, she became a private yacht and then charter yacht, eventually ending up in the Caribbean as a charter vessel.  She was sold here and moved to Covey Island Boatworks in Nova Scotia where a major rebuild commenced in the 1990’s involving all new frames and planking, new deck and refitted rig and interior.
She was sold in 2000 to the current owners, experienced wooden boat custodians and sailors, who have cruised her across the Atlantic and back, around Britain and taken part in numerous classic yacht regattas and events.  She is a regular fixture around the West country coast spending recent years between Falmouth, the Scillies and Padstow.
One of the largest of the surviving original Pilot Cutters, a well respected and admired yacht with a great pedigree and history.  She stands apart from many of the pilot cutters with her large and comfortable cockpit which is ideal for cruising, and her spacious homely interior which has far better headroom than most of her contemporaries.

Breeze was built by Coopers of Pill in 1887 as a Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter, one of the smaller sailing boats in the fleet, a 39ft sailing boat, and thought to be the only surviving example of a Coopers-built cutter.

Pilot cutter For Sale
Breeze languished for many years before being bought by the current owner and given to RB Boatbuilding in Bristol for restoration.  Her proper lines were established to put the correct shape back into the boat, and she was rebuilt from the bottom up between 2014 and 2016.  This was a total restoration. Only several small parts of the original sailing boat were left, including the mast step and part of the main beam with the official number carved into it.
All the planking, 99% of the frames, deck, interior and systems are new.  The mast was used again, but the rest of the rig was replaced.

Breeze is now in superb condition inside and out, and a very pretty and fast cutter that can be easily handled by two people rather than needing a large crew as is required on the bigger boats.  Interestingly she was fitted with twin electric motors and a large generator, a very satisfactory solution to the problem of where to place a prop shaft on a boat that was never designed to have one.
The interior is stunning with 7 berths including a double in the saloon, finished in varnished oak.  The large skylight makes her light and airy, access through the hatch is simple as the cabin sole and cockpit sole are not too different in height.
A very rare chance to own an original Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter, a piece of our maritime heritage that has been totally restored and is ready to sail away.

Planked in larch and oak bronze screw fastened to sawn oak frames.
Futtocks of the frames fastened together with copper rivets.
Grown oak floors across the centreline fastened through the frames with copper rivets.
No external ballast keel.  All internal ballast made of lead shot and concrete.  Centreline bolts all bronze.
Straight laid quarter sawn tight grained douglas fir deck on oak deck beams,, caulked and payed with pitch in the traditional way.  Deck fastened with bronze screws.
Bulwark all round on oak stanchions mounted through the coverboard in the traditional manner.
Iroko coachroof coamings with an integrated iroko skylight.  Bronze portholes in the coamings.  Iroko forehatch offset to starboard.
Self draining cockpit well with seating at deck level.  Scrubbed teak cockpit gratings.
Transom hung rudder with her original galvanised tiller.
Rig
Gaff cutter rig on a keel stepped solid pitch pine pole mast.
Varnished pine boom, gaff and bowsprit.
Galvanised wire standing rigging, new in 2016, with dead eyes and lanyards to external galvanised chain plates.
Running backstays on levers.
Running rigging all new in 2016 using traditional 3 strand rope.  All varnished wooden blocks.
Galvanised pin rail by the shrouds each side to take the falls of the running rigging.
Roller reefing on the mainsail with the original Appledore reefing system.
Staysail hanks to the inner forestay.  Jib with an integral luff wire runs to the end of the bowsprit on a traveller.
Bowsprit can be run inboard to reduce overall length.
Mainsheet is a 4:1 tackle with double tails made off to a specially designed galvanised horse on the aft deck.
All sails new in 2016 by Patrick Selman.  Cream Clipper Canvas with bolt ropes, all in excellent condition.  Mainsail, topsail, staysail, No.1 jib and No.2 jib.
Machinery
Boat powered by twin electric 48 volt motors, one each side for easy manoeuvrability.
LMC Marlin 5 motors from Lynch Marine with belt drives to stainless steel shafts.  Deep Sea Seal stern glands.
Pair of 2 blade bronze counter-rotating feathering propellers give a cruising speed of 5 knots, max speed 7 knots.
4 x 12volt 200ah gel batteries for domestics and powering the motors.
Batteries charged with a Fischer Panda AGT 11Kva diesel generator installed under the chart desk.  Dedicated start battery for generator.
Mastervolt 48 volt 25amp charger run by the generator or through shore power connection.
75 litre stainless steel fuel tank under the cockpit sole
140 litres of fresh water in 2 separate plastic tanks under the port saloon settee.

Main saloon has a large skylight above for light and ventilation.  Solid fuel cast iron cabin heater to port with a locker outboard.  Heavily built solid oak dropleaf saloon table on the centreline.  Port and starboard settee berths with lockers and shelves behind.
Starboard side settee has an infill to create a double berth.
Port side passage way into the forward cabin with the heads compartment to starboard.
Heads has a manual Jabsco sea toilet which discharges directly overboard.  Hand basin with bronze tap.
Forward cabin has 4 single berths, 2 either side, all of good length and width.  Forehatch above to starboard.

Built in 1996 by the current family owners, professional shipwrights and highly experienced in the boat trade having project managed and built numerous ocean going racing yachts, including Maxi and Americas Cup yachts.
This Laurent Giles design is known as the Dyarchy after the first boat built to these lines based on the Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter.  This is a stretched version of the original Dyarchy drawn up by Laurent Giles and Partners for the current owner creating a very fast, spacious and low maintenance classic yacht.
This yacht was designed and built from the outset to be a tough, low maintenance and capable cruising boat, her construction makes her incredibly spacious due to not having large frames inside the hull, strong and durable.  With a thick strip plank hull, sheathed inside and out with epoxy glass cloth from new, the quality of the build is second to none.  The scantlings of the construction, rig and fittings make her a very robust, tough and capable yacht that could sail anywhere in the world.
She has cruised extensively around the Bristol Channel, Ireland, Scilly Isles and English Channel.  She has also taken part in plenty of classic race events with notable success including:
-Won the Cock of the Bristol Channel race twice
-Line honours in the Pilot Cutter Falmouth to Fastnet Rock Race
-Winner of Falmouth Classics large gaffers class 6 times and best dressed vessel

Construction
Hull
Strip plank Douglas Fir of 1.5” (38mm).  Bonded with epoxy glue.
Hull sheathed in epoxy glass cloth both inside and out.  Heavy cloth lay up in the keel area of 12mm multi-axial and uni-directional cloth for added strength.
Topsides finished with 2 pack Awl Grip gloss refinished September 2024.  Below waterline hull stripped and refinished in September 2024 with International Intersleek 970 3 pack system.
Massive laminated douglas fir floors across the centreline of 8” wide and 20” deep.  6mm of uni-directional glass cloth across the tops of the floors, running up to the top of the hull and picking up the chain plates where applicable.  Floors then sheathed entirely in bi-directional glass cloth down to the keel with galvanised angle fittings bolted through the floors and picking up the keel bolts.
External iron ballast keel of 9 tons fastened with galvanised steel keel bolts.  Bolts are 24mm studs tapped into the ballast keel.
Internal lead trimming ballast of 4 tons.
 
Cabin soles throughout the boat are double diagonal douglas fir with the layers epoxy bonded together and the soles bonded to the tops of the transverse floors.  The edges of the soles are epoxy tape bonded to the hull sides giving a huge amount of rigidity.
In the forecabin, the bunk tops and fronts are made from double diagonal douglas fir, epoxy sheathed and glassed into the hull sides creating a very stiff framework structure.
Structural bulkheads made from double diagonal douglas fir, epoxy bonded and sheathed in glass cloth.  These watertight bulkheads are bonded to the hull and deck all round.  The bulkhead forward of the mast is triple diagonal for added strength in the mast area.  The doors and passages through the bulkheads are not watertight but could easily be made so.

Traditional cock bead straight laid Doulas Fir subdeck with a double diagonal douglas fir layer epoxied and vacuumed on top and sheathed in a layer of glass cloth.  Straight laid teak deck vacuum epoxy bonded over the top for the final deck finish.

Scrubbed teak toe rail all round with galvanised stanchions.

The owner of this fine vessel conceived an idea of building a new gaff cutter based on the Lowestoft sailing trawlers.
Mylne Classic Yacht Design were engaged to produce the design and they took inspiration from the smaller of the Lowestoft sailing drifters.
The hull was built by Stal Komplex, Gdynia, Poland.  The hull completed the RCD assessment and is CE approved to Category C for 15 persons.
Launched in 2017.
The interior fit out has been completed by the owner and since her launch she has been cruised around the Baltic and up to Norway.
A very strong and capable boat with a professionally built hull and excellent rig.  The interior is comfortable and in use, but could be altered to suit a new owner and a new vessel purpose if desired.

Designed by Fred Parker and built by Nunn Bros. of Woodbridge in 1959 to Lloyds 100A1 standard.
Bought by the present owners in 2013, they started a major refit that would last until 2017, covering every facet of the boat and her systems.  Full details of the refit work are below, but in summary the hull was rebuilt, new decks laid, interior removed and refitted with much new joinery and complete new systems and machinery.
The attention to detail found on this yacht is astounding, accomplished with the keen eye of owner and boat builder who both desired to create a very special yacht.  She was awarded Runner Up prize in the Classic Boat awards 2019.
Since her launch in 2017 she has been kept on the west coast of Scotland and has been cruised extensively each summer around the Highlands and islands.  She has spent every winter in a custom built tent where the owner has lavished care and attention on the boat, keeping her up to the exceptional standard they desire.
The volume and space on this yacht is hard to portray in photos.  She has a very generous beam and freeboard which both combine to give a distinct feeling of space and comfort.  With a large aft cockpit, double doors into the wheelhouse and a large saloon she has a vast amount of living space.  With 6’6” headroom through most of the boat there are few people who will struggle to be comfortable in this yacht.  Her large fore cabin gives 3 single berths plus there is a good sized double berth in the saloon which could be made more private if desired.  Cabin heating, hot water and 240v power supply make this yacht a real home from home to cruise in comfort whatever the weather.
She has proved herself as an excellent sea boat as well, cruising economically at 6-7 knots and never giving any cause for concern regardless of the weather.  The bow thruster fitted in the refit helps with handling in close quarter situations and there is excellent all round visibility from the helm.  A discreet CCTV camera on the forward mast aids the helms person in tight confines.
This is a superbly presented and very well maintained cruising motor yacht with a detailed recent refit history.  There are very few truly turn key boats on the market and this is without doubt one of those yachts.

Owners Comments
We fell in love with Fortuna II when we first saw her moored in Exeter canal basin, although it was clear that much work was needed to bring her back to life. We enjoyed working with Charlie Hussey at Baltic wharf and the whole process of restoring Fortuna II to a very high standard. Fortuna II featured in Classic Boat Magazine in October 2018 and in spring 2019 when she was awarded Runner Up in the Classic Boat Awards for restoration of the year of a motor vessel over 40ft.
Fortuna II has enabled us to cruise the West of Scotland and the Hebrides in comfort and style each summer for the last six years. She has taken us to many remote anchorages and the pilot house has allowed us to view the scenery and wildlife at close quarters in comfort. She has ample storage space for fuel, water and supplies to enable extended cruising.  She is safe and seaworthy on passage and comfortable at anchor even in foul weather. We feel that she would be ideal for another couple or family.  Fortuna II is a real head turner where ever we go and is great in classic regattas.  Alternatively, she would make a wonderful mothership to classic yacht racing with ample room for entertaining.
We have maintained her meticulously and stored ashore under cover each winter.  Having enjoyed Fortuna II for the last eleven years, we feel the time has come for us to move on to new adventures.

Built by the owner and completed in 2023 on the lines of a Brooke Marine design from the 1930’s.
Constructed and finished to a professional standard with very little use since launch so being sold as a virtually new boat.
This is a very elegant river launch, clearly displaying her pre-war design from Brooke Marine.  She will slip along at river speeds with virtually no wash, but is capable of reaching speeds of 10 knots.
Up to date Boat Safety Scheme Certificate for use on inland waters.

Construction
Strip plank hull using Red Meranti wood, epoxy bonded together.
 
Sheathed externally in 400gsm epoxy glass cloth.  Hull spray finished in Jotun 2 pack paint.
Decks laid in 6mm marine plywood overlaid with 7mm sapele deck planks with black epoxy seams.  Finished with Epifanes 2 pack varnish.
Varnished sapele sheerstrake and rubbing strakes.
Stainelss steel deck fittings with 8 pop up fender cleats.
Insulated engine box with a laid sapele top and fiddle rails so it can be used as a table.
Stainless steel quarter plates on the hull.
Small plate rudder with cables to an antique bronze wheel.
Cockpit sole boards in red meranti glued over plywood and finished in 2 pack varnish.
Moulded sapele bucket seats on plinths with fore and aft thwarts further aft with lockers beneath.
Machinery
Volvo Penta 2040 40hp 3cyl marine diesel.  Engine fully reconditioned in 2023 with new pistons and bearings, new alternator and salt water pump.
Max speed of 10 knots, cruising speed of 6 knots.
Engine console at the helm made from sapele with gauges inset.
PRM 120 gearbox to a 3 blade bronze propeller. GRP stern tube with a Volvo dripless water lubricated stern gland.  Bronze P-bracket to support the shaft.
12 volt Vetus battery charged from the engine alternator
Copper fuel tank of 38 litres with a CAV Delphi water separator filter.

A 70ft portholed traditional narrowboat built in 1992 by Roger Fuller of Five Towns Boatbuilding. Roger Fuller is regarded by many as one of the finest builders of his era. "Arabia" was originally powered by a Kelvin J3; having purchased the boat in 2010, the previous owner installed a factory fully restored Russell Newbery DM2 in 2016 and continued an exhaustive programme of refurbishment including some minor refitting, maintenance and a complete re-paint of the hull (Epoxy) and superstructure. Excellent full "out of water" insurance survey Nov 2021 : Boat Safety Certificate to Sept 2029. A fine 70ft traditional narrowboat, the hull being originally comissioned by the owners of Merlin Narrowboats (Braunston) in 2005 and fitted by themselves to an exacting standard for their own use as a comfortable liveaboard. The Gardner 2LW engine is one of approximately 30 built by Gardner throughout the 1990s and was removed from their previous boat and installed in the dedicated engine room. "Caliburnum" features many extras rarely found on boats built today - the hull, for example, has a chined 15mm baseplate making for better handling and easier mooring on the shallower canals. The current owner has fastidiously maintained the boat in excellent condition including a full professional repaint by Andy Russell and now presents her for sale in fine condition even including a full tank of diesel.
