Wooden Ships Comments on this G.L. Watson Gaff Cutter
Designed by G.L. Watson and according to the Greenock Herald, she was launched on 24th April 1887 from the yard of Thomas Orr Jr. from his Greenock yard on the Clyde.
Rebuilt by the Chantier Bernard in St Vaast, France. Relaunched in 2017.
The yacht was built to a commission for Robert Cowan Robertson who was a student at the Glasgow School of Art and an exact contemporary of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
The commission was No.134 for Watson with lines based on those of the Loch Fyne Skiff type fishing vessels which have a very distinctive stern, generous freeboard and a straight stem.
One of her defining features is her interior and most of the salon joinery is original. Her elaborate decor was a result of Robertsons wealth and artistic inclinations and is characteristic of Clydeside fashionable interiors of the time. One of her most notable features is a pair of stained glass sliding panels depicting a stylised Scottish thistle very much in the ‘Glasgow’ style, and although highly unusual for a yacht interior, they represent the true essence of this yacht, her history and her period.
The raised and fielded oak panelling, fluted pilasters, Ionic capitals and egg and dart cornice throughout the saloon represent the highest possible standard of joinery.
Bought by the present owner in 2009, there then started a major rebuild of the boat involving every facet of the hull, rig, systems and interior. The keel came off, stem replaced, 80% new planking and frames. Complete new deck structure and interior replaced or refurbished with all new systems and a complete new rig. This remarkable rebuild was imagined by the yachts eccentric owner whos ambition, vision and drive have helped give a new lease of life to this unique yacht.
The yacht was launched again in 2017.
This yacht is a completely unique piece of maritime history, unusual in her design, rich in history and pedigree and with a stunning interior first conceived and fitted over 125 years ago.

3 x 125ah 12 volt batteries for engine starting and domestic use. Charged from the engine alternator or through the 25 amp Quick Energy shore power charger.

Studer sine wave inverter.
233 litre stainless steel fuel tank.
2 x 250 litre stainless steel water tanks.
45 litre Vetus calorifier for domestic hot water, connected to the engine and 204 volt immersion coil.
Accommodation
The interior of Nell is perhaps her defining feature, A saloon which remains exactly as it was at the time of her launch, designed by her first owner Robert Cowan Robertson. He would be as at home in the saloon today as he was in 1887.

Moving forward through the port offset panelled door into the exquisite saloon.
Starboard side dropleaf oak table with a leather Chesterfield buttoned settee either side.
Original raised and fielded oak panelling, fluted pilasters, Ionic capitals and egg and dart cornice throughout the saloon make this a totally unique yacht and give the saloon a very special feel.
Of all the joinery features, the pair of stained glass sliding panels depicting a stylised Scottish thistle are particularly notable.
In each corner of the saloon is a locker and small side board.
Large varnished teak skylight above.
Port side panelled door going forward. The forecabin has the galley on the port side and 2 single berths to starboard.
Galley has oak worktops and joinery with a Taylors 030 paraffin stove with oven, top loading 12 volt fridge compartment and a basin with hot and cold pressurised water.

Falmouth Pilot Cutter Pellew For Sale
Wooden Ships Comments on this traditional pilot cutter for sale
VAT will be charged on the sale of this vessel. This can be reclaimed by a purchasing company that is VAT registered.
Pellew was built by Luke Powell and his Working Sail Yard in Truro, Cornwall, and launched in February 2020.
The lines were taken from the Vincent, a Falmouth Pilot cutter built in 1852 for the Vincent family of St Mawes. She worked for 70 years as a pilot boat, finally retiring in 1922 and ending her days as a houseboat on the Percuil River very close to the yard where she had been built.
When the idea to build a new pilot cutter of considerable size, a 68ft boat, was born, the lines of Vincent were seen as the ideal basis and the project to build Pellew began. Her keel was laid in 2017, and less than 3 years later, she was launched to begin a career as a commercial charter vessel.
The sailing yacht was designed and built from the very start to comply with the MCA regulations and has been constructed to MCA Category 0 standards so that she can operate worldwide. She is currently coded to Category 2 (60Nm from safe haven), but with extra safety and communication gear, she is eligible for Category 0. She is fastened throughout with bronze and copper and is planked in oak top to bottom, so has been built to last from the best available materials.
Charter boat for sale
Pellew is an extremely tough and capable sailing yacht but also elegant and graceful. She works well as a charter boat, offering awe-inspiring holidays on the west coast of Scotland, but she could very well be used as a sail training vessel or for expedition voyages to remote parts of the world.
She has 8 guest berths and is licenced for 15 persons in total with a comfortable crew cabin aft, large saloon, guest accommodation forward and 3 heads compartments with showers. Her commercial-grade galley can easily cater for a full complement of crew with a large fridge and freezer, dishwasher and oven.
This is the biggest sailing boat to have been built in wood in the UK for many years and was a landmark project, the result is a superb vessel that will survive for decades to come, and this is perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to purchase a new sailing boat of this size and type

Wooden Ships Comments on this Liverpool Class Lifeboat
Liverpool Class RNLB built by Groves & Guttridge Ltd, Cowes, in 1939.
She served as the lifeboat for Cloughey, Co. Down with a well documented service record.
After being sold out of the RNLI in 1966, she was used as a private motor launch.
Between 2010 and 2012 she underwent a major restoration in the hands of Nelsons Boats, a yard specialising in lifeboats. She was put back as close as possible to her original service condition by sourcing as many original parts, features and fittings as possible. She was re-engined with an almost new Ford 4D. The hull was found to be in excellent condition with no structural repairs required during the refit period.
This vessel is a living and working piece of maritime history in excellent condition, very capable and tough with legendary sea keeping qualities. She is not equipped with the luxuries of a modern yacht and as such offers a different type of boating but she does it with style. Complete with forward tent offering a dry cabin with 2 berths when required.
The boat is on the National Register of Historic Ships and is eligible to fly their dedicated ensign.
This is a remarkable boat with many original features and fittings. Clean survey from 2021 available.
Currently in undercover storage at the vendors home with facilities to lift onto transport.

Wooden Ships Comments on this Danish Topsail Schooner
Built in Denmark by Ustrup of Vejle in 1934.
Originally built as a fishing vessel for gill net fishing, she is typical of the Danish designed vessels of the period with a bluff bow, sweeping sheer line and an elegant elliptical counter stern. Launched with the name MIAS, she worked out of Hvide Sande with the fishing number RI100. Sold to the UK in 1979 where she fished out of Sunderland, before moving to Maryport in 1987. She continued fishing until purchased by the present owners in 1996.
Converted to her current configuration by her shipwright owner between 1996-2000, she carries an eye catching topsail schooner rig and has an MCA Category 2 commercial licence for 12 persons. During the initial conversion all her hull fastenings were doubled up with approximately 10% of the oak hull planking replaced along with most of the deck beams, carlins and then a new deck laid.
Very nicely fitted out below decks with 8 berths including 2 doubles and 4 singles. Laminated teak bath in the heads compartment.
She has cruised over the last 25 years as a family boat and as a charter vessel, exploring the Irish Sea, Scotland, Ireland and Brittany.
A superb little ship that doesn’t need a large crew to handle her, ideal for continued charter work or sailing as a private yacht. She has excelled appearing in various films and TV productions with her rig making her very attractive to the productions crews looking for something a bit special. She also has the visual impact to command appearance fees for the various boat festivals around the UK where she is a regular attendee.

Wooden ships Comments on this De Vries Lentsch Blue Water Ketch
Designed by De Vries Lentsch and built by Dutch luxury yacht builder Dik Van der Heiden in 1987 as a blue water ocean cruising yacht, specifically designed as a comfortable and capable yacht for extended family cruising.
In only her 3rd ownership, this yacht has travelled many thousands of miles around the globe, crossing the Atlantic numerous times and served as a cruising home for a young family. Designed and built to withstand the rigours of ocean sailing, her hull is immensely strong and her sheltered centre cockpit makes her a very safe boat at sea. The ample deck space and cavernous interior make for very comfortable live aboard conditions as she has proved over the years.
Continual upgrades and improvements in recent years include a new teak deck in 2014, new teak coachroof decks in 2019, engine rebuild 2019 plus new generator, batteries and a water maker.
This is a serious live aboard cruising yacht with excellent pedigree and provenance, more than capable of setting off again around the world be it with a family or single handed.

Sparkman and Stephens 40ft 1965 Cruiser Racer Yacht For Sale
Wooden Ships Comments on this Bermudan sloop classic yacht
40ft Bermudan sloop rigged yacht designed by Sparkman and Stephens to the International Cruiser Racer 8 meter rule. Built by McGruer and Co. Ltd to Lloyds 100A1 in 1965.
McGruer were known for their run of ‘Cruiser Racer 8m’ yachts, a popular design that offered a fast and easily handled cruising yacht capable of club racing at weekends. The commissioning owner of this yacht was an industrialist from Glasgow and approached Sparkman and Stephens to design him a yacht to the International Cruiser Racer 8m rule. He then asked McGruer to build the yacht and the result is a superb vessel of top-quality construction with arguably prettier lines than McGruers own CR8m yachts.
Her construction is a composite design using galvanised frames interspersed between steamed oak timbers. In the previous 30 year ownership, the yacht was subjected to a rigorous maintenance program including complete refastening of the galvanised frames with stainless bolts, each one insulated from the frames to avoid electrolysis. She is now in excellent condition and very original with only a few alterations to bring her up to date.
Bought by the current owner in 2021, she is sadly offered for sale due to family circumstances. A comprehensive 2021 survey is available to potential purchasers. This is a very beautiful classic yacht in good condition, ready for next season to go cruising or racing.

Wooden Ships Comments on this McGruer 8 Meter Cruiser Racer
8 meter Cruiser Racer (8mCR) yacht designed and built by McGruer & Co. In 1963.
McGruers built 15 of these yachts, distinctive with their elegant lines and familiar raised dog house aft, which is iconic McGruer.
The 8mCR was developed after an amendment to the original 8 meter racing yacht rule, creating a fast and elegant yacht with comfortable accommodation for her crew, enabling the yacht to travel between regattas and house her crew in comfort. With their 8 meter pedigree these boats are exciting to sail and turn heads everywhere. The Clyde became a strong hold of the class with a large active fleet through until 1975.
This yacht is perhaps one of the most well known of the class, commissioned by Peter Odlum, a stalwart of Irish sailing but no stranger to Clyde racing or west coast cruising. She was his second McGruer designed 8mCR,. Built to Lloyds 100A1, in her first season she scored 17 wins from 25 starts and won the Lloyds Register Yacht Trophy. Peter Odlum continued to enjoy racing success and enjoyable cruising with INISMARA, before commissioning James McGruer to design the yawl, RINAMARA, launched in 1968.
With just her third owner, she was purchased in 1995 by her current custodian after an extended lay-up of some 10+ years in the sheds at McGruers. Lovingly re-commissioned, great care was taken to maintain the boats original specifications while sympathetically modernising some areas.
A very well presented yacht oozing pedigree and charm.

£65000
Buchanan Prior 37 launched in 1964 and built to Lloyds 100A1 classification. Built for a syndicate of 3 owners who campaigned her regularly in offshore races until she was sold to the present owner in 2002. Then started a 3 year major bottom up rebuild of the boat which required the whole interior to be removed, planking and frames replaced, new bronze strap floors, all new interior and systems. Since then she has been cruised extensively and continually upgraded with a new engine in 2022, new rigging and sails in 2017 and numerous other works. This is probably the most complete and turn key yacht of her type we have ever had the pleasure of offering for sale, a real gem from a dedicated and experienced owner. Wooden Ships Comments on this Buchanan Prior 37
Alan Buchanan Prior 37 designed by Alan H. Buchanan and built by R.J. Prior & Son in 1964 to Lloyds 100A1 classification.
Launched for a syndicate of 3 owners to compete in RORC races. Came 2nd overall in the 1966 Round Britain & Ireland Race with Leslie Williams as crew plus 3 Fastnet Races. Continued racing until the mid 1980’s and bought by the present owner in 2002 from the last of the syndicate owners. At the time she was clearly in a very poor state and was in need of a major refit.
This started with Tim Gilmore at Dolphin Quay Boatyard in Emsworth where the hull was stripped back to bare and the interior completely removed to access the structure. The coachroof was lifted off and the deck taken up. A major bottom up hull rebuild commenced, details below and the boat launched in 2005. Since then she has cruised extensively around the Channel, France and the West Country with continual maintenance and upgrades to an exceptionally high standard. She has also been raced regularly at Falmouth Classics and other classic regattas, proving to be a fast boat in all conditions.
In 2017 she had a major rig upgrade including sails and standing rigging, a new Vetus engine in 2022 and the varnish and paint work is kept up to an excellent standard every year.
This is a superbly presented yacht in turn key condition with a full and extensive inventory of equipment rarely seen with a yacht for sale. It is not common to find a classic yacht of this pedigree in such excellent condition, she is wanting for nothing and is a totally complete package ready to go cruising or classic regatta racing next season. It would be hard to find a better yacht of her era, and was said by a very experienced survey to be the best wooden yacht he had ever inspected.

Wooden Ships Comments on this Daniel Fyfe Loch Fyne Skiff Gaff Cutter
Built in 1895 to a design by Daniel Fyfe at the yard of Morrris and Lorimer on the Clyde.
Daniel Fyfe was related to the first William Fife of Fairlie and clearly boat building ran strong in the family DNA. Born in Ardrossan, he became a shipwright of note, eventually settling in Millport as Daniel Fyfe & Son.
The Loch Fyne skiff style of hull was familiar to him as he built many fishing vessels and private yachts alike based on this seaworthy and pretty hull. These boats had evolved with the aid of naval architecture to be an excellent design, eminently sea worthy with very attractive lines.
The yacht was commissioned by Noel Guinness, a solicitor from Dublin and part of the brewing family.
The current owner bought the yacht in 1993 and spent the first few years of ownership sailing her hard and covering a lot of miles around the west of England, Ireland and Northern Europe. After an accident one dark stormy night on her berth, the yacht was taken ashore for minor repairs which developed into a 27 year total rebuild carried out by the experienced and talented shipwright owner.
The work involved all new hull planking, frames and deck plus a complete new interior and systems. The work has been finished to a very high standard and the boat is presented as though she has just come out of the shed. She was re-launched in June 2022.
Registered on the National Historic Ships Register.
A very elegant yacht of excellent pedigree in as new condition, a superb blend of history and modern practicality to create an excellent yacht.

W.G. McBryde ‘fifty-fifty’ Motor Sailer Please refer to WWW.WOODENSHIPS.CO.UK FOR MORE INFO. And also for a second video
£69950
Described as a 'fifty-fifty' yacht by her designer W.G. McBryde, this fine vessel cleverly blends the benefits of both the sailing boat and the motor yacht in a way that many motor sailers seem to miss. Her lines are exquisite and perfectly balanced with a tall ketch rig and central wheelhouse. Her spacious interior of 15 Thames Tons offers an aft cabin and stunning saloon with nearly all original joinery, plus a large heads compartment and galley in the bows. With twin engines she is easy to handle in close confines and cruises easily at 6 knots, but she also has remarkable sailing performance with tiller steering on the aft deck for those sunny days offering 'wind in the hair' sailing. A truly stunning yacht refurbished by her experienced and dedicated owners.

Wooden Ships Comments on this W.G. McBryde ‘fifty-fifty’ Motor Sailer
Striking with a distinctive silhouette, the Fifty Fifty cruiser—a phrase coined by the yacht designer W.G. McBryde—has been attracting the admiration of Scottish sailors for over 90 years. McBryde, though not one of the most famous Scottish yacht designers of his era, was well established as a designer of traditional power and sailing craft. Built for the family who owned the Gleniffer Marine Engine Manufacturing Company in Glasgow, the yacht was launched under the name GLENIFFER before reverting to the original intended name, GLENGOUR.
Purchased by the present owners in 2001, both highly experienced with wooden yachts, GLENGOUR has benefited from extensive re-fitting, refinishing, and sympathetic modernisation over the past 25 years. All work has been carried out to the highest standards, with an attention to detail rarely seen in a commercially restored vessel. A comprehensive history file accompanies the boat including the original lines plans. This remarkable piece of Scottish maritime history is now seeking her next custodian.
On file and available by request we hold a collection of additional photographs and a detailed list of the extensive work completed during the current ownership.
In yachting there is always compromise no matter what level you look at and rarely does that compromise yield such great results as with this yacht. Designed for the Scottish climate, her spacious hull of 15 Thames Tons in less then 40’ of length offers plenty of interior space out of the wet weather including a wheelhouse and inside helm, but she also has comfortable decks with outside seating and an outside helm position for the days of sunshine and a stiff breeze. Twin engines for easy manoeuvring and a comfortable 6 knots cruising speed, but also a tall ketch rig giving her very pleasing sailing performance. Shallow draft to get into smaller anchorages, but the hull form to give enough stability to stand up to her canvas. This is a design that very cleverly blends the benefits of motor yachts and sailing yachts accomplishing the best of both in one incredibly elegant yet practical vessel.

DESIGNER’S COMMENTS:
Considering this craft as a sailing yacht, her sail spread is not large, but it is very efficient and one that is exceptionally easy to handle. She is able to go to windward and remarkably fast for a vessel of this type. Her firm bilges give good stability. The hull is a good compromise and excellent accommodation for four persons has been planned. Wheel steering is arranged in the companion deckhouse, and a tiller aft for use when under sail’

OWNERS COMMENT:
Glengour’s own website celebrates the essence of the boat and provides more information on McBryde’s unique design and on the builders, James Adam & Sons. There are insights into the boat’s rich history and snippets about the books, magazine articles, documents and plans that belong with the boat. You can see some interesting photos on the Shed Page from our extensive Restoration. Other webpages give a sense of the luxury of life aboard and how relaxing and fulfilling it feels to go cruising on Glengour. The Sailing and Updates Pages (with short video) give an idea of how well Glengour is performing with her recent feathering props and new sails.
Glengour is on the National Historic Ships Register and a search on their site for Glengour will bring up the boat’s DETAILS page, which has an active link to the boat’s website.

£75000
Built in Ireland to fishing vessel specifications, the build was completed by an RNLI engineer and she was launched in 1991. A very robust hull of iroko planking on oak frames. RNLI alloy wheelhouse gives her a purposeful look. Her hull shape is unusually fine in the ends meaning she sails surprisingly well, this is not a blunt fishing boat hull. Interior fit out gives 6 berths in 2 sleeping cabins plus the saloon. New Beta 90hp engine in 2022. A large rig gives her surprisingly good performance under sail. New rigging 2018 and recent sails. A fantastic boat for northern climates, capable of long distance expedition sailing. Excellent 2024 survey available.

Wooden Ships Comments on this 36′ Motor Sailer Ketch
The hull was built by boat builder Charles McElroy in Ardboe, N. Ireland and launched in 1991.
The uncompleted hull was purchased by local man Aiden Riley, a lifeboat mechanic, who completed the build with the help of cabinet maker Vincent Murphy.
Plans for the completed boat were drawn up by naval architects Barr & Associates with stability analysis by Strathclyde Maritime Design.
She is largely based on traditional fishing boat lines, however her fore and aft sections are finer giving her a good grip in the water and better sailing performance than a round bilge fishing boat.
The RNLI connection is evident throughout from the aluminium wheelhouse to numerous high-end fittings, attention to details and the general no nonsense finish.
Bought by the present owner in 2014, a thorough rolling refit commenced with upgrading of much of the equipment and systems. Most of the rig is new, all electronics, nav systems and a Beta 90hp engine fitted in 2022.
In recent years she has been used for cruising the west coast of Scotland and the Hebrides, where she has proven herself as a very capable and comfortable sea-going boat, well known and much admired in many places. Her hull shape is most interesting with good grip in the water, giving her rather impressive sailing performance. Although a motor-sailer at heart, she has a big sail area and can stand up to her canvas. She will easily make 6/7 knots on a beam reach.
Often mistaken for a Fisher 37, she is superior in many ways to that design and is a very impressive yacht, superbly well equipped, and ready for any extended cruising. Her large wheelhouse gives excellent space and shelter. Dedicated sleeping areas in the forward and the aft cabins separates sleeping space from living space.
Whether the plan is to potter around the west coast of Scotland, or head north to Iceland, Svalbard and beyond, this is a boat capable of extended expeditions as well as relaxed local cruising.
April 2024 survey available.
The vessel is being moved south to Dartmouth in the spring of 2025.
